"5840 Balloon, Isle of France, 2nd Prize, Racing for the Gordon Bennett Cup." unused postcard from the Adolph Sedge Publishing Company in Saint Louis, unused. In the 1907 Gordon Bennett Balloon Race from the publisher's city, they landed at Hubertsville/Herbertsville New Jersey, garnering $1000 for their 2nd place finish. The Airpost Journal Vol XXV No. 2 (November 1953) provides many details on the competition & opines that mail was probably dropped from this & all other participants, although any such example is decidedly rare. $35.00 bpm(s)r
"5846 Hawley and Post and their Balloon 'St. Louis'" postcard mailed circa-1908 to Mrs. Peter Richards in Clinton Fall Minnesota, noticeable corner rounding, light spotty toning both sides. In the 1907 Gordon Bennett Balloon Race from the publisher's city, they landed in Carroll County Maryland good for 9th place. "Lieut. John Rogers making Flight in Wright Biplane at / U. S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md." post card mailed OCT 11 1914 with Balboa stamp to R. B. Allardice in Providence Rhode Island, published by I. & M. Ottenheimer in Baltimore, made in the USA, a little toning at the left back edge, trivial corner rounding. Once you realize the surname in the caption is misspelled--Rogers should be Rodgers--it all make sense. Pioneer aviator Calbraith P. Rodgers demonstrated the possibility of carrying mail by airplane, in part by delivering mail to his brother Lieutenant John R. Rodgers at Annapolis. "Luftschiff / Graf Zeppelin (L. Z. 127) / über München" circa-1930 Postkarte advertising the services of philatelist and zeppelin-post specialist Otto Edenharter of the same city. Message area on back bears replicas of important cancel & cachets. Advertising text in the address area is in German: 'Graf Zeppelin-Luftschiff Flugpost-Karten / geflogen von und nach Moskau, Tokio, Los Angeles, / New York, Sevilla, Rio de Janeiro usw., kurz gesagt / alle zeppelins verkauft, kauft und tauscht / dauernd der Zeppelinpost-Spezialist / Otto Edenharter, München 19, Frundsbergstr. 44 / Schreiben sie mir bitte ihre Wünsche! Preislisten kostenfrei.' Which translates roughly: '... Zeppelin cards / flown to and from Moscow, Tokyo, ..., Seville, Rio de Janeiro and so forth, among others / all zeppelins bought, sold and traded / contact the zeppelin-post specialist ... / Please write me with your wantlist Our pricelists free of charge'.
