"Abomey, Bénin / Cérémonie Vaudoun / Culte Ninsouhoue (temple Semassou)" showing a voodoo cult ceremony; unused continental-size postcard from a copyrighted photo by François Astorg, small bottom corner crease, light bluish toning in the top front margin possibly done at the printer. "Abomey, Bénin / Egoungoun [revenant] / Photo ©François Guibilato" unused continental postcard, minor wear at 2 corners, tiny spot near the stamp box. The costumed person is a member of a voodoo cult, supposedly becoming an animated corpse that has returned from the grave to help people who are alive. Several can be seen at special celebrations, including funerals, dancing & performing magic tricks, dispensing flattery & good wishes for donations. Egoungoun is also seen spelled egungun & egoun goun. Rare card on a rare subject: nothing like it, offered or displayed, when we searched the Internet. $10.00 bm
"Collection des Missions Africaines 13 - Une Ecole Superieur (Dahomey)" black & white carte postal with undivided back, depicting many native school children, mailed TCV NOV 1905 at Le Blanc Indre with French stamp to St. Julien- L'Ars in Vienne, light Lignac transit marking on its toned back. Sold but front side still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged 300-dpi scan (publication quality) in .jpg format for $3.75. d-d
"Collection des Missions Africaines 3 - Une Noce du High-Life (Dahomey)" depicting a wedding of blacks, postcard with undivided back mailed TCV 8 -9 1905 from Le Blanc in Indre (French stamp) to St. Julien-L'Ars in Vienne, light cancels, toned back. $15.00 d-d
"Initié tchankponon, culte de la terre. / (Koko, Bénin)" unused continental-size postcard copyrighted by Gilles Favier, tiny upper corner bend, light but extensive toning at the top of the back is probably from the printing process. Tchankponon is a traditional deity, an earth god who protects men against epidemics. The young man is an initiate into the cult that reveres it. "Ouidah: ville d'histoire, de traditions et de culture..." unused multiview continental-size post card with 3 scenes--L'Arbre de l'Oubli (Tree of Forgetfulness (about which slaves were required to revolve) at the right, Porte de non Retour (Gate of No Return) in center & a voodoo tree carving at the right; from Japhet AFFO, one corner with 2 small bends, otherwise excellent condition. The small town of Ouidah is also seen spelled Whydah, Juda & Juida. However you spell it, millions of people were sold into slavery here to Europeans and Arabs since the early 1700's.
